Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he loved playing numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York City to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he played many hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and focus more on the game.
The real improvement in his game happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently play against one another. Howard was able to access a few of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his cunning thinking skills. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of NL texas hold’em.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker arena today. He relocated to Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
