Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of entrants can get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in almost every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.
Although it seems complicated at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play with ease. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi-low offers an overwhelming array of betting options and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, and a few shooting for the low hand.
