Hiding Tells

Do you ever receive that itch? The itch to gamble, to head to the nearest betting house, to find a superior stakes game of Texas hold em, to sit at a Pontoon table for hours on end. I really like that itch. And I love to scratch it.

I also really like to watch people today gamble. No two poker faces seem similar. When I gamble I like to feel I put on a poker face which is impassable. Except I know I’ve specific mannerisms. For 1, the only time I smoke cigarettes is when I bet on poker or Black-jack. And then I smoke. Except I chain smoke whether I am winning or losing, no matter whether I have a good hand or bad.

I once wagered inside a weekly poker game. The casino game was often 5 card draw. There was a player who wagered with us every single week who constantly wore a hat. When he was dealt a excellent hand, unconsciously, he would begin touching and betting with his hat. Pointless to say, he by no means won.

The very best poker gambler I ever saw was a man who created much more actions and gestures at a poker table than anybody I had ever seen. He was impeccable in the way he dressed. Usually an costly suit and tie, boots shined and nails trimmed. He was diligent in this manner. And he was generally brushing his pants or rubbings his hands or putting his chips in tidy little piles.

I use to study him for hours on end. I’d tried to see if I could notice his tell. Selecting fuzz off his vest- did this imply he was bluffing? Stacking his chips within a short pile – did this imply he had a good hand?

Several years later I ran into him inside a bar in Boston and we had a beverage. I asked him if he had been aware of all those activities he created or if they were subconscious. He informed me that just about every little thing he did at a poker table was deliberate. He said that everyone is often checking out everybody else’s poker face. They are attempting to spot the the tell.

So his method was to give them lots to assume about. His reasoning was if they have been thinking about him selecting a piece of fuzz off his shirt and what it meant they certain weren’t pondering about their cards.

His technique was diversion. And it worked for him. Never give up a method that functions for you.
